Abstract

Models are important to scientific inquiry. Teachers should provide students with opportunities to construct and use models to develop scientific knowledge. To do so, teachers must understand scientific models and how to use them in teaching. This research investigated the perspectives on and understanding of scientific models of 41 in-service teachers. The researchers collected data using a questionnaire that contained both Likert scale (quantitative data) and open-ended (qualitative data) formats. The researchers analyzed the quantitative data by frequency and percentage, and analyzed the qualitative data by content analysis and interpretation. Based on the data, most of the teachers understood that models are constructed to represent targets to describe and explain natural phenomena; that one target can have multiple models, depending on ideas or purpose; and that models are subject to change when scientists have new evidence or theoretical frameworks. However, the research results revealed that most of the teachers misconceived that models should be the same as their target in all aspects, which might result from thinking of physical models. Moreover, most of them tended to have a “pedagogical perspective” on models. They emphasized the use of models to present scientific knowledge. This research suggests ways to develop teachers’ understanding of models, so that they can have a “research perspective” that helps them teach students to construct and use models in scientific inquiry.
