This research aims to study the conservative cultural ecology in the works of Khamphun Boonthawee so that this concept becomes better known in the circle of Thai literature. This study focuses on the ecological and conservative cultural aspects in 48 works by Khamphun Boonthawee, divided into 13 short stories, 20 novels, and 15 documentaries.
The findings reveal that regarding the 13 short stories, Khamphun Boonthawee mainly presents the image of modern Northeastern people and society. In other words, the Northeastern people who journey into the capital city are patient in their spending, humble and non-materialistic. However, a number of Northeastern people end up being criminals unknowingly. Regarding the 20 novels, Khamphun Boonthawee presents the image of the Northeastern people that is not different from the short stories. Nevertheless, the novels feature details relating to traditional beliefs as well as customs and ways of life of the Northeastern people. This can be seen in their belief in the sacredness of nature.
The Northeastern people’s beliefs in sacred beings and supernatural power are reflected in Khamphun Boonthawee’s works. These beliefs represent the Northeastern people and are indistinguishable from their ways of life. The supernatural power depicted in the setting of Thoog Kula Rong Hai, in particular, is believed by Northeastern people of all generations from the old days up to the present day to be utterly frightening. It is believed that Thoong Kula Rong Hai used to be the location of an ancient city whose ruler was unethical. As a result, the city met its doom and sank into water. Regarding the 15 documentaries, Khamphun Boonthawee deliberately presents the local dishes cooked by many Northeastern migrants in Bangkok in such works as “Heaven Orders to Fight,” “Northeastern People Are for a Revolution,” “A Wandering Northeastern Child (Volume 1),” and “A Wandering Northeastern Child (Volume 2).” In such works as “Four Awkward People in Germany,” “A Northeastern Boy Takes the Plane,” and “Khamphun is Afraid of Death,” the lives of Northeastern people who seek a better fortune abroad are presented. Furthermore, historical trivia of the Northeastern people are presented in works such as “The Legends of Northeastern Ghosts,” “Historical Tales of the Northeast: Phee Ba, Phee Boon,” “Ya Khoo Khee Hom,” “Animals and Insects Eaten by Northeastern People,” “Local Vegetables of the Northeast,” “The Legend of an Indian Mahout to Gui or Suay People,” “A Statement of A Prisoner,” and “A Legal Killer.” The last two works are autobiographical related to the information the writer gained while working as a jailer.
